Glenville, WV – Glenville State College joins a number of colleges and universities around the United States who have introduced esports into their realm of varsity sports. Esports offers multiplayer online video game competitions, which can be viewed both in-person and through livestreams.
Esports at Glenville State College will launch in the fall semester and offer students three ways to get involved through varsity, junior varsity, and recreation teams. Varsity players will be eligible for scholarships based upon ability, experience, and team need and participate in tier one games such as Fortnite, Valorant, Overwatch, Super Smash Brothers, CSGO, Madden, FIFA, Hearthstone, NBA 2k, and League of Legends.
The Pioneer eGaming Center, located within the Mollohan Campus Community Center, is currently under construction. The 3,000 square foot space will house over 30 custom-built Gravity Gaming PC’s, viewing, console, and game review area, a virtual reality area, and a private fitness area.
“Being affiliated with an esports program allows students to branch out of their comfort zone while doing something they love,” said GSC Esports Coach Logan Harrison. “Students in our program will learn important life skills such as teamwork, communication, work ethic, performing under pressure, and self-confidence. Esports opens up a world of opportunities for future careers such as webcasting, graphic design, video editing, event organizing, marketing, social media management, and many more. I look forward to being involved in the growth of the students and Glenville State College’s evolution into the future,” he added.
Any full-time GSC student is eligible to be on the team. Tryouts will be held on a rolling basis and help to determine the student’s placement and scholarship eligibility. Those who are interested in joining the team or would like more information should contact Harrison at Logan.Harrison@glenville.edu or (304) 881-0725.
