GLENVILLE, WV – Glenville State College (GSC) seniors Catherine “Catie” Pelfrey and Madisyn Furr are the recipients of the Fall 2020 Women’s Leadership Circle Scholarship. The Scholarship, totaling $500 each, was open to all female students at Glenville State College.

Pelfrey, an exercise science major from Marion, Ohio, is a member of the GSC softball team, Parliamentarian for the Student Government Association, a mentor for GSC freshmen, a resident assistant, a member of the campus athletic committee, and an athletic representative for the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. Her mother is Tara Casey, father Jeremy Pelfrey, stepmother Amanda Pelfrey, and stepfather Kristian Casey.

For Pelfrey, the scholarship was reassurance that she is on the right track. “I found out during my lunch break at work and was over the moon,” she said. “Being chosen for this scholarship is an honor. It gives a little assurance that all my hard work and dedication does not go unseen. The women who were selected are all very strong and beautiful young women. Each one is paving their own unique path and doing it in their own way and time. To be selected as one of the two recipients out of this group of women is amazing. This scholarship will help aid my education and allow me to go on to continue to empower not only women but all individuals. The hard work and long days are worth it. I work very hard for everything I have accomplished and receiving this scholarship will make a huge impact!”

“I would like to thank all of my professors, teammates, and family. My parents and siblings are the reason why I have the drive that I do. I would also like to thank all of the women who are a part of the Women’s Leadership Circle. You all are wonderful and I appreciate all that you do for the college and community!”

Furr, an accounting and management double major from Glenville, West Virginia, is a member of the GSC Honors Program, Hidden Promise Program, Phi Beta Lamba, and a Becker Education Ambassador. She is the daughter of Willie Furr, and she volunteers for the Hidden Promise Program, the Honors Program, and for her church.

“For someone who lives in such a small town, I have always had big goals and followed every path necessary to reach them,” said Furr. “Although I have always been a very driven woman, I believe that scholarships push me harder to achieve my goals because I have to work hard to keep them. Being a member of the community who is appreciated is just one of the reasons I aspire to continue being an empowering, caring, and self-sufficient woman.”

The Women’s Leadership Circle was founded on the basis of fellowship, opportunity, and philanthropy and envisions a community of female givers who provide opportunities and support to female students at Glenville State College. In addition to aiding projects on campus, members will help create a culture of female empowerment on the GSC campus and surrounding community, helping women to prepare for and grow in their careers and leadership positions.
