GLENVILLE, WV - The 2020 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) results are in, and Glenville State College (GSC) was highly ranked in several categories.

Both first-year and senior students ranked GSC higher than peer institutions in terms of student-faculty interaction. Students reported positive academic interactions through high-impact practices, such as service-learning projects, community service, internships, and senior capstone experiences. Students also reported high satisfaction with their educational experiences and being encouraged to utilize campus learning support services such as tutoring and the campus writing and math centers.

In the 2020 survey, GSC students again ranked the institution with a high satisfaction ranking; 80% of first-year students and 72% of seniors said they would choose Glenville State College again if they were to start their college careers over. Additionally, 86% of first-year students and 81% of seniors rated their overall experience with GSC as “excellent” or “good.” GSC has previously participated in the NSSE survey in 2011 and 2016.

Overall, Glenville State received high marks in many other areas from first-year and senior students when asked about the nature and quality of their experiences at GSC. Both groups felt they were able to have discussions with people who have differing viewpoints and backgrounds. Seniors said they were able to acquire job/work related knowledge and skills and learned to work effectively with others during their time at GSC.

“In reviewing the NSSE results, I am very proud of the data but also not surprised. In the raw data – but in the student comments in particular – the positive student/faculty interactions really shine through. Our faculty push students to do their best work and do so through immersive learning and one-on-one mentoring. Those interactions are essential for active learning and it is encouraging to know that students realize and appreciate the unique opportunities provided to them at GSC,” said Glenville State College President Dr. Mark Manchin.

The National Survey of Student Engagement is conducted by Indiana University. The student survey annually collects information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduate students spend their time and what they gain from attending college. The results also reflect behaviors by students and institutions that are associated with desired outcomes of college and point to areas where colleges and universities are performing well and aspects of the undergraduate experience that could be improved.
