Glenville State College Hosts 'Wear Red Day' Event
Thu Feb 22, 2007

Glenville, WV--Glenville State College is helping area healthcare professionals raise awareness about the number one health threat among women…heart disease during National Heart Disease Awareness Month. GSC is teaming up with Gilmer Primary Care to host ‘Wear Red Day’ event on Friday, February 2, 2007 at 12:00 p.m. in the third floor ballroom of the GSC Mollohan Campus Community Center. The event will feature Gilmer Primary Care’s April Lloyd and Kathy A. Reis, R.N., B.S.N., CDE from the Marshall University School of Medicine, who will discuss the risk of heart disease for women. Everyone who attends will receive a Wear Red Day tack pin and have a chance to win a variety of door prizes.

Glenville State College and Gilmer Primary Care’s activities are in partnership with The Heart Truth, a national awareness campaign warning women about their risk of heart disease. The campaign is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and other partner organizations. For more information, visit http://www.hearttruth.gov or call the NHLBI Health Information Center at (301) 592-8573.

Only 55 percent of women know that heart disease is their leading cause of death and most fail to make the connection between its risk factors and their personal risk of developing heart disease. The Heart Truth features a Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness. This symbol links a woman's focus on her outer self to the need to also focus on her inner self and her heart. What's a Red Dress got to do with it? A simple Red Dress works as a visual red alert to get the message heard loud and clear: Heart Disease Doesn't Care What You Wear—It's the #1 Killer of Women.

This national campaign is building awareness of women's heart disease and empowering women to reduce and prevent their risk. It is reaching women with important heart health messages in community settings through a diverse network of national and grassroots partner organizations.
