GLENVILLE, WV – The Glenville State College (GSC) Archives now has a more complete “snapshot” of life on campus in the 1970s thanks to a generous donation from a graduate. Charles “Chuck” White has donated several boxes of negatives and accompanying contact sheets of photographs taken at GSC between 1971 and 1975.
The images were captured by White during his time as a photographer for Glenville State’s campus newspaper at the time, the Mercury. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and graduated from GSC in 1976.
“We really appreciate this generous donation from the White family. Some of the images we did have already but thousands of others we’ve never seen before, so it will be very beneficial in terms of telling the history of Glenville State College in that era. Additionally, having access to the negatives provides us with the full-size, original image which really helps when we need to reproduce them,” said Robert F. Kidd Library Director Jason Gum.
The donation includes images from athletic events, homecoming, Greek events, theater and music performances, WGSC (GSC’s former campus radio station), Glenville State’s 1972 centennial celebration, and student activities. Additionally, the collection also includes photos of flooding in and around Glenville, the West Virginia State Folk Festival, holiday events, and the old Kinney Shoe factory.
Patricia and William White joined Chuck in organizing and providing the donation.
GSC’s Archive is located in the Robert F. Kidd Library. The Archive maintains and preserves historic materials related to the development of Glenville State College and the history of north-central West Virginia. The historic materials housed in the collection are available for research by members of the campus community and the general public.
