GLENVILLE, WV – Several Glenville State College Department of Land Resources students received scholarships for the Fall 2021 semester. The students included Gabrielle Dean, Evan Jedamski, Heather Moore, Chloe Richardson, Ronald Stearns, and Benjamin Sturtevant.
Gabrielle Dean
Dean, of Etam, West Virginia, is a junior studying Natural Resource Management with a concentration in Forest Technology and is a recipient of the Ed Grafton Forestry Scholarship.
“I couldn’t be more excited or thankful to be awarded this scholarship,” said Dean. “I wish I could shake everyone’s hand who made this possible, and thank them individually. Thank you again for choosing me as the 2021 recipient of the Ed Grafton Forestry Scholarship!”
The Ed Grafton Forestry Scholarship was established in 2009 and is awarded annually to a deserving student who is studying Forest Technology at Glenville State College. The scholarship is named in honor of Ed Grafton who taught forestry courses within the Department of Land Resources for 34 years. The student should have a GPA of 3.0 at the time of application. Recipients of the scholarship are selected by the faculty and staff of the Department of Land Resources.
Evan Jedamski
Jedamski, of Sand Fork, West Virginia, is a senior studying Natural Resource Management with a concentration in Land Surveying and Environmental Science. He is the recipient of the Gregory A. Smith Scholarship.
“Through this scholarship, I and many other fellow students greatly benefit by being able to better afford our education,” Jedamski said. “My internship with Smith Land Surveying also provided valuable experience that will benefit my future career. I greatly appreciate Mr. Smith’s support of the Land Resources Program.”
The Gregory A. Smith Scholarship was established in 2009 by Smith, a 1976 GSC alumnus and Glenville businessman, to benefit students studying Land Surveying. Scholarship recipients are selected annually by a committee comprised of Smith, the Department of Land Resources Chair, and the Head Instructor of Land Surveying. Preference is first given to students in the GSC service area, and then to students in the central West Virginia area.
Heather Moore
Moore, of Duck, West Virginia, is a senior studying Natural Resource Management and is the recipient of the Clark Jr. and Marjorie Hardman Scholarship.
“I was very happy and appreciative to learn that I was selected for the generous Clark Jr. and Marjorie Hardman Scholarship,” said Moore. “Thank you for this financial support toward my higher education. Receiving this scholarship allows me to maintain my GPA, complete my degree, and achieve my career goals.”
The Clark Jr. and Marjorie Hardman Scholarship was established in 2010 by Mr. D. Stephen Hardman to honor the memory of his parents, as well as recognize the important part the college played in his parents’ education and their life’s pursuits and accomplishments. This scholarship is awarded by the Land Resources Department. The award is given to a student who has displayed high academic achievement with an identified need for financial assistance.
Chloe Richardson
Richardson, of Strange Creek, West Virginia, is a freshman studying Wildlife Management, and is the recipient of the Lyndsee Gay Natural Resource Management Scholarship.
“Thank you so much to the scholarship donors for choosing me for this scholarship,” she said. “This will help me continue my education and help me pursue my career conserving wildlife in West Virginia.”
The Lyndsee Gay NRMT Scholarship was established in 2021 to honor Lyndsee Gay, a Glenville State Natural Resource Management and Forest Technology graduate who tragically passed away in 2018. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student in the Natural Resource Management program at GSC. The student should have a minimum GPA of 2.5 at the time of application. Recipients will be selected by the faculty and staff in the Department of Land Resources.
Ronald "Abe" Stearns
Stearns, of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, is a senior studying Natural Resource Management with a concentration in land surveying. He is a recipient of the Rick Sypolt Surveying Scholarship.
“I am very honored and grateful to receive the Rick Sypolt Scholarship,” he said. “This scholarship has provided me financial help in pursuing a college education in a field of study I thoroughly enjoy. Receiving this scholarship makes me want to work even harder to ensure my goals in the future of land surveying.”
The Rick Sypolt Land Surveying Scholarship was established in 2019 and is named in honor of Professor Emeritus Rick Sypolt, who taught forestry and surveying courses for 40 years within the Department of Land Resources. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student studying Land Surveying at Glenville State. Students should have a GPA of 3.0 at the time of application. Recipients of the scholarship will be selected by the faculty and staff in the Department of Land Resources.
Benjamin Sturevant
Sturtevant, of Salem, West Virginia, is a junior studying Natural Resource Management with a concentration in Land Surveying. He is the recipient of the Samuel Elliot Robinson Scholarship.
“Being the recipient of the Samuel Elliot Robinson Scholarship has been a great honor. I greatly appreciate the founders of this scholarship, Devona and Marshall Robinson,” he said. “I am thankful for the financial assistance this award has provided and to the professors within the Land Resources Department who recommended that I receive this award.”
The Samuel Elliott Robinson Scholarship was established in 2007 by Devona and Marshall Robinson in memory of their late infant son. The award is made on recommendation of the staff of the Department of Land Resources and is awarded to a Land Surveying student who is a dependent of an employee of Allegheny Surveys, Inc.
