Congressman Alan B. Mollohan
Congressman Alan Mollohan is expected to visit Glenville State College next week to help celebrate the completion of a multi-million dollar renovation project benefiting both the campus and the community. West Virginia's First Congressional District Representative is scheduled to participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for GSC's Alan B. Mollohan Campus Community Center. The event will take place on Monday, April 9, 2007 at 12:30 p.m. in front of the building's atrium entrance.
Mollohan has strongly supported the project through his position on the House Appropriations Committee. He secured more than $9 million in Federal Housing and Urban Development funds for the facelift. Congressman Mollohan worked with U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd to secure $2.7 million in initial funding in 2003. Mollohan then earmarked the final $2.2 million for the project in a 2006 Federal spending bill.
"Education of our young people is the key to a bright future," Mollohan said. "This center will be a cornerstone of the campus; a popular gathering place for educational, cultural and recreational activities. I am pleased to have worked in support of it and I look forward to the benefits it brings to Glenville State College and the surrounding region."
The Mollohan Campus Community Center offers something for everyone both on campus and throughout North Central West Virginia. The building houses the campus bookstore, health services, dining facilities, post office, and fitness center as well as the student government, student life, and residence life offices. The complete overhaul and expansion of the college's old student union also resulted in the structure providing space for a ballroom, an auditorium, and meeting and conference rooms available for use by local residents and area groups.
