Glenville, WVâGlenville State College offers a wide array of off-campus classes at high schools in the area every semester. GSC is currently conducting classes in Braxton, Calhoun, Gilmer, Nicholas, Ritchie, and Roane Counties as well as at the Gilmer Federal Corrections Institution.
At Calhoun County High School, nineteen students are enrolled in Critical Reading and Writing II (English 102) being offered as a GSC off-campus course. Instructor Larry Harris has been teaching off-campus classes for GSC in Calhoun County for over fifteen years. âI have actually had students from Glenville State College come here to take a class that wasnât available to them on campus,â said Harris. Most of the students in Harrisâ class have taken a number of college credit courses at Calhoun County High School including English, Algebra, History, Sociology, Psychology, Business, and more. Several of these students will have earned twenty-one college credit hours while still in high school.
âIt is very important for us to give our students the opportunity to take these classes. It allows them to be better prepared to compete when they get to college,â said Calhoun County High School principal Karen Kirby. Before a student can enroll in a college credit class, they must meet certain guidelines including ACT or placement test scores and at least a 3.0 grade point average. âThe Calhoun County Board of Education understands the importance of these classes and helps pay some of the tuition and buys books for the students,â said Kirby.
All nineteen of Harrisâ English 102 students say they are going to college next fall. Four of those intend on going to Glenville State College. Melissa Jarvis will have eighteen credit hours under her belt when she arrives at GSC to major in Accounting. She commented, âI like the fact that I will be ahead and can graduate earlier.â
Kayla Miller also plans on studying Accounting and Business. Miller will have twenty-one college credit hours. âI have taken Sociology, Psychology, History, Algebra and English. The courses are much harder then normal high school classes so it has opened my eyes up to what to expect at college,â she said.
Stephanie Stacy will have already earned at least 18 credit hours when she heads to GSC to become a Pre Physical Therapy major. âI really like the idea that I will have several of my course requirements out of the way. It should help with flexibility in scheduling. I should be able to graduate sooner and save money,â said Stacy.
Cassie Mullins has been taking college credit classes since she was a sophomore at Calhoun County High School. She plans on majoring in Business Administration at GSC and will have twenty-one credit hours that she earned in off-campus courses at CCHS. âI like GSC because it is rural, and close to my home and family,â said Mullins.
Jamie Kennedy of Grantsville graduated from Calhoun County High School in May of 2007 with fifteen college credit hours from off-campus classes. Kennedy is now a freshman at Glenville State College majoring in Accounting and is thankful that she had the opportunity to pick up so many hours while still in high school. âFinancially, it saved me a lot of money because CCHS helped pay for the classes. I certainly recommend that high school students take advantage of off-campus classes when they are offered,â said Kennedy.
Calhoun County High School is also offering Personal Health, as well as First Aid and Safety this semester. The Calhoun Gilmer Career Center has College Algebra and Principles of Sociology. All are GSC Off-campus courses.
