Glenville, WV - Winners of the annual Glenville State College Juried Student Art Show have been announced. The show was open to any full-time GSC student who wished to submit pieces of original art created during their college career. This year, the show received twenty entries and was judged by GSC Registrar Ann Reed.

"We are very proud of the entries we received this year. The students worked very hard and were very passionate about their art. We had a wide range of mediums from ceramics to oils to digital renderings. It’s a great show,” said Associate Professor of Art Christopher Cosner.

Brittani Kosan won first place for her black and white photography piece titled “Bone N’ Hole.” She is a freshman art major from Toronto, Ohio, but has called Glenville home for the last six years.

“Art gives me an outlet to express my feelings. I suffer from anxiety and have PTSD so expressing myself seems to be helping me,” said Kosan. “I would like to thank Professor Cosner and Professor Chapman for making me push myself to my artistic limits and beyond. Thank you also to all of my classmates, whom all do fantastic work, which makes me want to do as well as them.”

Matt Welch won second place for his digital art piece titled “The Mesa” and an honorable mention for his oil painting titled “Southern Cardinal.” He is a senior art major from Glen Daniel, West Virginia.

“For my winning piece, I wanted to produce landscapes that are fantastical in nature but real enough to believe that you could find them somewhere on earth,” said Welch. “I would like to thank my mom for being the best person and supporting me and Professor Chapman and Professor Cosner for providing insight and the ability to transform my art into what I want it to be.”

Larissa Henry won third place for her oil painting titled “Oasis” and an honorable mention for her ceramics piece titled “Night Owl.” Henry is a junior art major from Petersburg, West Virginia.

“I would like to thank my professors, Chapman and Cosner, for teaching me the skills they know. I would not be at the level I am without them. I would like to also thank my husband, Nathanial, for being my rock and encouraging me always to put my best self forward even when times are tough,” said Henry.

Kaitlin Corbitt was recognized with an honorable mention for her watercolor piece titled “Sea Turtle.”

Reed, who judged the show, has grown up with an appreciation for the arts, immersing herself in acrylic/oil/silk painting, slip casting, basket making, stained glass, photography, leatherwork, and more. She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Planning and Design from the University of Idaho and her love for the arts continues to this day.

“My compliments to all of the participants in a job well done. I enjoyed all of the pieces, and I am impressed by the variety of techniques and media used, as well as the level of talent we have here at Glenville State College,” said Reed.
