Alumni Day at GSC Slated for April 16th
Fri Mar 25, 2011

Final plans for this year’s Glenville State College Alumni Day on April 16, 2011 have been made. All alumni and friends of the College are invited back to campus for this event.

Those coming back to Glenville the evening before and those living within driving distance to campus may want to take advantage of GSC’s spring theatre performance, The Diary of Anne Frank, under the direction of Professor Dennis Wemm, at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening, April 15th in the President’s Auditorium in the Harry B. Heflin Administration Building. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

On Saturday, April 16 several activities have been scheduled throughout the day, including an all-day track meet at Morris Stadium; a 1:30 p.m. alumni women’s basketball game and a 3:00 p.m. alumni men’s basketball game, both in the Jesse R. Lilly, Jr. Gymnasium; plus 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. tours of GSC’s newest student housing complex, i.e. Goodwin Hall; all culminating with the popular evening alumni banquet.

All activities on Saturday promise to be wonderful opportunities for everyone to socialize, reminisce, and re-establish contact with fellow alums and friends of Glenville State College that they haven’t seen in a while. The Alumni Center, open from noon – 4:30 p.m., will be headquarters for the day’s activities with registration (tickets, name tags, etc.) and social time for everyone throughout the afternoon.

The College Bookstore will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday for everyone to have an opportunity to find that special GSC souvenir and the Robert F. Kidd Library will be open during these hours as well. At some point in the afternoon, everyone will also want to allow time to view the student art show that will be on display in GSC’s Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Center.

The annual meet and greet social time for banquet attendees will be held in the pre-function area of the Alan B. Mollohan Campus Community Center from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., followed by the alumni banquet at 6:00 p.m. in the ballroom. The evening’s spotlight at the banquet will be on the Alumni Association’s guests of honor: Alumnus of the Year, William A. “Bill” Niday ’71; Alumni Achievement Award Recipient(s), Jody A. Hopkins ’88 and James B. Oppe, II ’82; Community Service Award Honoree, Carla Overfield Cosner ’89; Outstanding Teacher Award Recipient (Public Schools), Deanna Brown Stewart ’81; Alumni Chapter Award Honoree, John N. Hoover ’66; and Outstanding Young Alumnus, Dr. G. Jay Kerns ’99. The spotlight will also be upon the families of Dr. Robert “Bob” Higgins ’49, H. Jack Conrad ’51, John D. Cutlip ’56, and Bruce Hathaway’ 81 as these four gentlemen are honored posthumously.

Recognition will also be given that evening to outstanding Glenville State College students who will receive GSC Foundation Academic Awards at the banquet. These academic awards are presented each year on the recommendations of faculty members from various departments with funds for these awards being provided by alumni and friends of Glenville State College.

Margaret Miller Goodwin ’51, for whom Goodwin Hall has been named, will once again be sponsoring a reception in the Alumni Center immediately following the Alumni Banquet. All banquet attendees are invited to continue their evening of fellowship and the renewing of acquaintances there after the awards ceremony.
