Glenville, WV—‘A Measured Response: Charles Allen Wright’ an exhibition of South Carolinian sculptor and painter Charles Allen Wright, is being featured in the Fine Arts Gallery at Glenville State College between January 14th and February 8th. The unique exhibit displays twenty original sculptures and paintings by Wright.

The artist’s sculptures in this collection use multiple media, including wood, steel, and glass, stone, plastic, and alabaster. The pieces use interconnected angles with rounded shapes. Wright’s two-dimensional art is created with pencil, paint, and mixed media, with concepts very similar to his sculptures.

Wright’s Safety Red 9/11 sculpture is on display in the GSC amphitheater. The piece is the artist’s response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001 when the World Trade Towers were destroyed by terrorists. “I had to create something to respond to that disaster. This peace is symbolic of the towers, the planes, and the pain of the event,” said Wright. Two of Wright’s sculptures are also on display in the Mollohan Campus Community Center, and another is located in front of the GSC Fine Arts building.

Painting

Wright was born in Conway, South Carolina in 1956. His fascination with sculpture and painting began at an early age. Wright received his Bachelor in Fine Arts degree from Kent State University in 1978, and a Masters in Fine Arts from Washington University of St. Louis, Missouri in 1983. Wright is currently the Chair of the Art Department at Western Illinois University; prior to that, he spent 17 years teaching art at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. Glenville State College President, Dr. Peter Barr, and his Special Assistant, Dr. David Millard were both at CCU with Wright, which led to the exhibit coming to GSC. Both Barr and Millard own pieces of Wright’s work.

‘A Measured Response: Charles Allen Wright’ will be on display at the Glenville State College Fine Arts Gallery January 14th - February 8th. The Gallery is open between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour before all performances at the Fine Arts Building. Admission to the exhibit is free. A reception for Charles Allen Wright, will be held on Thursday, February 7th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery at Glenville State College. The public is encouraged to attend.
